<snip>Jim, airframe manufacturers, such as Boeing Aircraft, have been building and testing hydrogen fueled piston and jet engines in airframes for quite some time; applicable to commercial aircraft. The same has been going on in the automotive industry. Future ground transportation vehicles power needs appears not lay solely with electricity.I think that we need to be exploring multiple alternatives. If people
will encourage nuclear power it will happen much sooner. Regardless
of the option(s) that work the best we will need a lot more
electricity to make it work. I think for POV's we will have electric
only vehicles for those people that don't need to drive long distances
and some type of hybrid for those that do or that need to carry heavy
loads. We need to look at wind, tidal, and solar power; but we have
to find a good way to store the power before it is going to do a lot
of good. Until we have a good workable situation we should be
drilling for our own resources. Even if all cars ran on electricity
we would still need quite a bit of oil to be able to get the other
chemicals that we need.
Much in what you say, Jim, I agree with. But I just can't bring myself to favor flooding the country with nuclear plants. The waste from these plants has to be dealt with in a manner that won't pose a threat to populations for thousands of years. Besides that, there is only so many places where the waste can be stored. An earthquake or volcanic eruption can do heavy damage to unwisely chosen storage places.
Using France as an example (as some do) of a country gone nuclear leaves me cold. What comes to mind is a lot of people have yet to deal with the consequences of running out of nuclear waste storage space. The inevitable has only been postponed.
We have enough coal to satisfy our energy thirst for the next 300 years. Why not develop scrubbers that would make it atmospherically safe to burn coal? As for cars, there are diesel engines that will burn Castor Bean oil and Caster Beans are a hearty crop whose use would not bring on shortages of other foodstuffs.
