I use Forte as my news server and for the life of me, I can not find
anything in there TOS (terms of service) that limits me from cross
posting to 5 groups or less.
Where did this 5 group thing come from?

Cross-posting limits is a function of your own newserver. Back in the 90's Worldnet and Roadrunner (as I remember) both limited cross-posting to five groups or less. Anything else was automatically considered SPAM and deleted by the ISP and a violation of the Service Agreement
My current ISP does not limit crossposting, however, they buy their access from one of the big news-servers, so there might be a limit there.
I've cross-posted on a couple of occasions, specifically when a particular topic was of interest to both groups. (Occasionally, the Brit group (I frequent) and MNID have intersected, but cross-posting is rarely successful and never appreciated. Too often, it ends up on tangical topics, with people trying to explain varying concepts.*)
*The American media has dominated the world market for decades. So, think back what we saw on TV and at the movies. Except for the Lone Ranger, cowboys regularly shot Indians in prodigious amounts. BTW, there is not a single recorded instance of Indians attacking a circled wagon train. After the American Civil War, fully one-third of the "trail hands" on cattle drives were Black Americans. If a movie featured a big city, it was either named as New York City, or implied (or Los Angeles). With dozens of detective shows, and police dramas, over the decades, it was hammered home over and over again that the murder rate was astronomical. (Consider the impact...when I think of LA, one thing that pops to mind is "Gangs". While I'm sure they're a problem in certain areas, I'd guess that the vast majority of LA inhabitants go about their daily lives and never see a gangbanger.)
alt.thinkquest was originally "homesteaded" by MIND members that desired a less combative venue. Fair enough, as far as I'm concerned. While I rarely post there, I do lurk. Originally, a fairly homogeneous group of fervent Democrats, I've seen months where there was not one anti-Bush post. It's as if they wanted to develop USENET relationships outside the realm of partisan politics. Go figure<G>. (Even trudogg, wallowing in his Holy Mission dictated by his Bush Derangement Syndrome, is capable of posting non-Mission observations from time to time.)
Currently, there's a poster that just finished long multiple posts on his travels as a younger man. In a different, America, I daresay. But worth reading...
Of course, with the influx of the ex-Worldnetter's the "flavor" of alt.thinkquest is beginning to change, maybe even for the better, but that's not my call to make.
Personally, I think that *most* cross-posting is not appropriate, and rather infantile behavior. Notice! "MOST" DOES NOT MEAN "ALL".
However, cross posting between a group that thinks George Bush is the Devil, and another group that thinks Teddy Kennedy should have been shot decades ago, is rarely productive.
