Damn, damn, damn.
If the world spent the money it spends on war on finding cures
for cancer, the world would be a far better place. No one will
convince me that it couldn't be cured & prevented ... it's just a
question of paying for the research!
Good luck, charles. I'll be cheering you on, albeit only on
usenet. ;)
Its amazing the stuff they're coming up with, tho. It just takes time.
Did you see 60 minutes last month, when they documeted the new, experimental
treatment for cancer? It hasn't gone to clinical trials yet, but that should
happen in about 3 years. The stuff they've been doing in the lab, tho, is
fantastic.
I haven't seen 60 minutes for over 30 years. <g> If it's on
network TV, I haven't seen anything since probably the mid-1960s.
I used to like it, but the commercials are too much for me any more.
They attach an antigen to nanoparticles, either carbon or gold, and inject them
into a person. The antigen is tailored to seek out individual cancer cells.
After an appropriate time for the antigens to attach to the cancer cells, they
have the subject get into a 13.56 Mhz electromagnetic, "radio" field - high
powered - which heats up the nanoparticles. Since the nanoparticles are
attached to the cancer cells, they heat the cancer cells and "cook" them to
death.
The procedure has absolutely no side effects for the subject - so far - when
they test it on real people, they'll know more.
Looks to me like a "cure" for every form of cancer that they can come up with
an antigen for. There's 3 sets of antigens so far, prostate, bone, and
something else - breast? Not sure. Maybe if they can keep Sen. Kennedy
alive... maybe if they can keep Patrick Swayze alive... hey, we have to stop
losing such fine people, including charles.
Being a Native Floridian, with so much sun, I have little spots
of pre-actinic keratosis popping up all over my arms and legs. I used
to go to the dermatologist to have them burned off (actually frozen
off) back in the days when I had insurance. The last doctor gave me a
prescription for fluororacil 5% topical solution to apply to the areas
so I wouldn't need to be running to the doc every few months.
After insurance, two areas appeared, one on my chest and one on
my right thigh. These were about the size of a dime, dark brown, and
raised. I didn't know if they were pre-actinic keratosis; they didn't
look like it, but I figured, what the heck, let's try the medication.
I used the med as directed on the package and within several
weeks the spots were gone, leaving no trace, and not even a scar.
What's also weird is that although the skin around the one on my neck
became a little red during the treatment, it didn't bleed, peel, etc.
The medicine only worked on the bad cells.
Although I've avoided the sun like the plague it can be since I
was 18 years old, those pre-18 years inflicted their damage. The sun
is not my friend, and you can spot me on the street, in parking lots,
or even going to my mailbox as the woman carrying the umbrella. ;)
Gosh, that's all really scary for not having insurance. Looks like it might be
under control, tho. Great.
