Thing is, we have the technology in hand now to create solar arrays that
orbit the earth. Very efficient. No worry over cloudy days. But we'd
rather spend 80 billion on Iraq.

With current technology we would have to cover about 20% of the land mass
in the US to get enough electricity for current needs. This doesn't even
take into account transmission issues. By putting the collectors in
orbit, you get efficiency increases by many magnitudes and can beam the
power down to where it is needed regionally without the need for
transmission across the continent. Win Win IMO.
