Re: Cablenut - upload/download speed

cg,

You do realize v4.08 of this tool was last updated on 10/26/2001, right? The
files in the update to it are dated 11/4/2002.

Also, did it detect your OS as Windows 2000, as it did my XP Pro? If so,
many of the values in 'adjuster' do not exist in XP.

Additonally, in 2004, XP SP2 made changes to TCP/IP and Winsock, making them
more auto-adapting to the connection, and thus self-tuning, as Vista is. If
you hard-specify those values, Windows is forced to use them and its
self-tuning, and therefore its adaptability, is diminshed if not entirely
disabled. The 2002 updates do not relflect the SP2 changes.

For TCP/IP tuning, all I find necessary is Dr. TCP from Broadband Reports.
Only two settings are significant in XP SP2, TCP Receive Window Size (RWIN),
and, less importantly, Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU). Satellite service
needs a couple more tweaks.

If you let me know whether you are cable, satellite, or DSL (which I
suspect), I'll let you know what settings to start optimizing with.
Broadband Reports' Tweaktester can then check your results and provide
guidance. Or, after removing all changes made by cablenut (be sure the added
registry keys are removed), you may set Dr TCP up as shown below and use
Tweaktester.

TCP Receive Window - blank
Window Scaling - Default
Time Stamping - Default
Selective ACKs - Default
Path MTU Discovery - Default
Black Hole Detection - Default
Dial UP RAS MTu - blank
Mas Duplicate ACKs - blank
TTL - blank
MTU (for each adapter in the list) - blank

For a 1.5 mb DSL PPPoE connection, you can set Receive Windows to 31944, and
MTU for the adapter making the connection to the router to 1492. Double RWIN
as speed doubles. Leave MTU alone.
