Still...where they gonna go? The "progressive left" is stuck in exactly
the
same situation as the "uber-conservative right". Limbaugh is going to
look at McCain and Obama and tell everyone that an rightwing *** is
better than a leftwing *** any day of the week. I can't imagine
someone
like Cindy Sheehan saying that Osama is not "pure" enough and to go for
McCain.
I'd vote for anyone on the left just so that we might get more to
the middle than we are today.
Ideally, I'd like someone consistently in the middle.
your idea of the same, might be wildly divergent.
That is probably so, and you will understand when I say that my
impression of your middle is pretty damned far to the right.
Let's put a measure on it; assume middle is zero, and the farthest
left is North 180 degrees, and the farthest right is 180 degrees
south.
Yes, yes, I picked South for the right for two reasons; "they've
gone South," so to speak, and there are the Dixiecrats. Just thought
I'd get that out of the way.<g>
I see you generally about 120 degrees South. On some ideas, maybe
135 degrees south.
FWIW, I see myself about 60 degrees North, with some swings to 135
degrees south on a few issues like health care.

Oh really.
I do not support the capitol punishment. There is no moral quandary, it's just that I don't trust the police/prosecutors to come up with the right person. (I can name any number of people that I would hang, and I wouldn't lose a moments sleep)
I am very mildly pro-choice. When I hear about 32 million abortions as the new Holocaust, well, all I can really think is that there were 32 million unwanted children that didn't make it. (I fairly bristle at some of the insane arguments made by pro-choice crowd, and truly wish that most of them would shut up an go away. They are not making things any better. I have NO Problem with a complete reversal of Roe vs.. Wade and then mandating that each individual state regulate the practice. My gut reaction is that a simple majority of the states would simply re-instate a Roe vs.. Wade type arrangement. A few would institute some restrictions, and a couple would ban abortion on demand completely.)
I am a Second Amendment purist. While I could easily name quite a few people that I really wish would never, ever, ever get their hands on anything more deadly than a dull butter knife, I think the right of self-defense trumps everything else. I would not tolerate any state, local or city governing body to restrict that right.
I have long supported the 100% legalization of all drugs, but in my declining years, I'm gradually modifying that position. It's simply easier to formally remove children from extremely adverse environments if drug usage remains illegal. That said, I would easily support the reduction of drug usage to a non-jail sentence felony.......EXCEPT, all children can be removed from the household, permanently with a minimum of effort. (Oh, and driving "under the influence")
I have advocated the removal of all corporate income taxes. ALL taxes are eventually passed on to the consumer, and I think way to many corporate decisions are too heavily influenced by the IRS. What I would really like to see is flat "consumption" tax, with each taxing authority adding their taxes directly on to that. ALL taxes (or tax rates) should be subject to a public referendum every five years. I would entertain arguments that 5 years is too short, in some instances and 10 years might be necessary. And I'd tax everything from toilet paper to corporate jets. The byword would be, if you use more, you pay more. There'd be no such thing as a non-profit corporation. Who cares. You consume, you pay.
I think that several government agencies should be terminated immediately, and most reduced significantly. I would have no objection to the Department of Education publishing, once a year, guidelines for a National Level diploma. Should take about six people and a secretary. I'd say four people, but really, you'd have to assign at least one, and maybe two to listen to the arguments over "intelligent design" and "evolution".
If I was the elected President tomorrow, the US would withdrawn from the UN the next day, and the institution would be given 30 days to re-locate. The UN has move from some lofty ideas, through world-class inefficiency, to awesome, pervasive corruption.
I would set a task for the Senate to review, re-affirm, revoke, or modify every treaty that's pending or "still on the books".
I would DEMAND that every illegal alien, return to where ever, with some harsh penalties for those that fail to comply, and then beef up the immigration service to process immigrant applications in a timely manner. (Say 30 days for non-immigrant aliens that are not seeking permanent residence). At this point I would not set quotas.
I would open up a dialogue with both Canada and Mexico about a formal Federation of North America. I anticipate that it would be a short-lived dialogue, but it deserves consideration.
I would institute proceedings to declare personal information as private property, and declare gathering of such information, without explicit approval as a property crime. (In other words, if you want MY information, you should be willing to pay me for it.)
I would declare AMERICAN (not English) as the official language of America, but I would NOT create a department of American Language purity, however there WOULD be a Standard American dictionary and style book issued with every census and that would be the official government language for all federal level communications and writings. Otherwise, I'd let the language wonder about just like it's always done.
EVERY socialist type institution would be considered for phase out. It should take about a week for the Tennessee Valley Authority and Rural Electrification folks. BTW, I have no problem with CO-OP's as long as they don't demand "exclusivity" under the law. It'd take at least two or three decades to get rid of Social Security.
I think a fair amount of the "Government" lands should be sold off. That said, I have no problem with National Parks, even big National Parks. (The say the feds own 3/4 of Nevada. I've been to Nevada. You'd be lucky to get $5 and acre.)
This is tricky. I WOULD make the Federal Government, the arbitrator of the thousands and thousands of little disputes that are bound to arise between states. Arizona and California are draining the Colorado. I'd put a stop to that. Arizona would get a reasonable amount and California would get a reasonable about and if that's not enough, figure out something else to do. Or move.
I think the earth is warming. Hell, I think it's been warming since the end of the Little Ice Age. In another hundred years or so, it might get as warm as it was before the Little Ice Age. Who knows. Mostly, I don't care as long as the Hysterics don't try to mandate all these idiotic laws. (I read one character that said we need to reduce carbon emissions to 15% of current emissions otherwise BAD things are going to happen. My only observation is, this really might be one instance where "the cure is worse than the disease". Because, to achieve THAT level of reduction I guarantee some REALLY BAD things are going to happen and it's not going to take a century to do so.)
BTW....I like this one better...
