The doc said it was extremely unusual to see such excellent
results, but we agreed my stubbornness had suited me well. If I can do
it, most of you can, too. I do not need any pill for anything, and
will see him again in four months when I expect the numbers will be
even lower. Life is good!
Wrong!
At your age and family history you need to get your LDL to optimal levels, under 100
mg/dL.
In view of all you are currently doing, that will only happen imo with medication.
FACT: Most people are unaware that only 20% of your cholesterol comes from your
diet...the other 80% is manufactured by your liver.
What is the ideal HDL LDL ratio in the bloodstream?
Your total cholesterol is an important figure, but even more important is the ratio
of
LDL (bad) cholesterol to HDL (good) cholesterol.
Following are the normal and optimal levels of cholesterol levels:
LDL Cholesterol - Normal Levels: up to 129 mg/dL
Optimal Levels: Under 100 mg/dL

Btw, with Lipitor my LDL has maintained at a steady 43 mg/dL (from 150+) without any
special diet & exercise (and both my parents having heart disease, father's first
coronary at age 46).

Thanks, Dan, but nothing will convince me and my doc that
taking a pill is the way to control what I can control myself.
You're welcome.
Just hope at your age and family history, with an LDL of 122, you'll eventually find
yourself a doctor (preferably Cardiologist) who will convince you that your LDL is
still too high, only 20% of your cholesterol comes from your diet, and with all you
are doing it will not lower much more.
The way you are 'controlling yourself' still puts you at a higher risk for a stroke or
coronary, than if your LDL was well under 100 using proven medication.
Then there's the quality v. quantity of life issue.
You, with your actions evidently opted for the probability of more quantity (years of
life) by changing your diet and exercise lifestyle.
However with an LDL=122, imo your bad cholesterol is not under control, may have
improved your lifespan only slightly, and you've had to change your lifestyle to one
that I might guess is probably less satisfying in spite of your declaring, "Lovin' the
new foods".
Fwiw, I also gave long and hard thought after my Cardiologist gave me the lecture of
how best to reduce the risk of a coronary, stroke, not get diabetes, and prolong
my life. I told him I opted for quality over quantity, telling him that I will not
give up my lifestyle of enjoying cooking fine foods rich in all the 'bad" things,
my rewarding sedentary lifestyle (when I see a jogger with a smile on their face I'll
take up running), and less stress in favor of more physical activities.
When the quality of my life starts to decline in a major way, I'll reconsider further.
My doc respects my decision, acknowledging it was my life's decision to make, and
would continue to offer the possible affects of my life's choices for my
consideration.
Since most of what will happen is imo beyond our control.
good luck with your life choices,
DanlK
