Some progress on both fronts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft released a refresh of its first service pack for Vista to
beta testers this week, indicating the final release might be near.

As for XP, Microsoft said it released (get ready for another mouthful)
"Windows XP SP3 RC Refresh 2" to beta testers on Wednesday. Microsoft
said it is aiming for a release sometime in the first half of this
year, but added: "our timing will always be based on customer feedback
as a first priority."

The Win XP SP3 release was most recently scheduled for Q1 '08 but that
seems to less then a solid date given the above excerpt.

Given that both SP releases are refreshes of prior versions and the
long known fact that bug removal means new bug insertion - it might be
a while prior to either seeing the light of day in a final form. If
they keep fixing bugs prior to a final release we may never see
either. ;-))

What does a person get with sp3 as opposed to sp2? I find many of the fixes
to have nothing to do with any use I would make of a computer, such as,
windows messenger.

I just rebuilt windows and have a brand, spanking new xp installation. This
time, my floppy wasn't working, but I was able to do it all with the xp
disk. Over the years, I've saved a bunch of useful executables. The latest
good acquisition was this unzip utility: http://www.7-zip.org/
