I could find no paper in California mentioning it but a few links in publications elsewhere. There is a California document from 2006 http://www.energy.ca.gov/title24/2008standards/prerulemaking/documents/2006-07-12_workshop/presentations/2006-07-12_PCT_SHIRAKH_MAZI.PDF and a mention on the Berkley website http://dr.berkeley.edu/ with a link to a news program on it.
Is this true ?I'm in California and I've heard zero about this. They do have a
program that you can sign up with in the summer and in exchange for
something like 5% off your bill, you let them cut off or restrict your
cooling system when the power levels in the state are low.
I don't think anything is being "hidden". I don't see this even
getting off the ground, let alone growing any wings.
I would hope not, just found it odd that no paper in California reported it that is searchable on the net.
I received a notice (about 4 or 5 weeks ago) sent to me through US Mail, from the Electric company. The company offered to reduce my monthly electric bill if I consented to have a device placed on my central air conditioning system, that they can control in times of a surge in needed electricity is seen by the company.
It was a voluntary action to be taken on my part. There were several options that could be taken, tied to the amount of the monthly reduction in the electric bill. I don't remember the specifics of the proposal however, I did reject the offers made by the company. The offers were ridiculous. The more the temperature rose, the longer the company would be allowed to shut down the air conditioning system. My thought was the elderly who would need air conditioning but can't afford the progressive monthly increase in billing usage might buy into the plan and die should the temperature rise and their air conditioning system be turned off. The savings were something starting on the order of say, $20 going up to about $40, depending upon the length of time you allowed the electric company to shut down your air condition system. The electric company could shut down your air conditioning system for as long as about 5 hours.
I know some of my neighbors paid as much as $900 a month for their electricity when the temperature rose and became somewhat unbearable. The cost of electricity is progressively tied to the amount of use. The cost increases as certain levels of use is reached.
Water as well as electricity is a premium in Southern California.
