Way back when, you could get a full copy of Lotus 1-2-3 on a single 5 and
half inch floppy disk. Same for Wordperfect, and dBase. You also, might
wait weeks to get the particular driver necessary for your printer. Of
course, you had to get that driver from each different company.
Remember DIP switches?
Remember spending three days getting a modem to work?
Remember a team spending days getting a simple network of two computers
simply to recognize each other?

Yes I remember that history, and i think I speak for most to say I'm glad
those days are over. But what we were discussing was Software and it's too
many bells and whistles.
What we were discussing was the usual BS about MS "bloat".
People can disagree. If you think MS products aren't bloatware, you're
certainly entitled to your opinion.
That doesn't make a differing opinion bull***.
Well that
"bloat" mostly covered legacy programs at least until XP. Vista, which I
don't like terribly well, more or less has simply abandoned those programs
to history. (I'm sitting on a a scanner that will not work under Vista and
Visoneer says they aren't going to write any drivers for their
out-of-production scanners)
Personally, I'm getting along fine without MS software. Been using
open office for years and numerous other "open" software products.
Heck, I'm pretty close to getting agent to run under linux (I know,
it's not an MS program, but it is intended for windows, which is).
I run lots of non-Microsoft software. Supposedly, Vista will burn a DVD, but I've never tried. Windows Movie Maker (or whatever it's called) is the pits. I use Nero rather than Windows Media. I have a 8-program bundle of Replay software that handles all the different streaming programs including flv.
The key, IMO, is really mentioned above. Since 1995, with Win 95, I've had the expectation that if I bought any software, any hardware that says Windows Compatible, I'd be able to plug it in or load it, and it would work right out of the box. That's everything from video editing software to a router for a home network.
Vista has broken with that tradition. (Witness my scanner). And Vista isn't doing all that well, either. (BTW, my 1.5 TB Maxtor up and died.)
NOW is the time for the introduction of a revolutionary new OS.
