Yep, you can change the computername with no problems.

Wally,

The quickest way to do that is to fiddle with the root folder of the
drive.

Default permissions on the root should be:

Administrators (systemname\Administrators) Full Control <not
inherited>
This folder, subfolders and files
System Full Control <not inherited> This folder, subfolders and files
Creator Owner Full control <not inherited> Subfolder and files only
Users (systemname\Users) Read and execute <not inherited> This
folder,
subfolders, and files
Users (systemname\Users) Create folders/append data <not inherited>
This
folder and subfolders
Users (systemname\Users) Create files/Write data <not inherited>
Subfolders only
Everyone Modify <not inherited> This folder, subfolders and files

The risk above is that the only IDs that can change permissions are those
in
the Administrators group, and Creator/Owner. If you lose the association
for
your userid to the Administrators user-group, you may experience a flavor
of
Catch-22. As a precaution, you can add a full-control permission for your
specific userid:

[userid] (systemname\userid) Full Control <not inherited> This
folder,
subfolders and files
I will, thanks

Allan

Terrific, thanks Allan. I get a little confused because my permissions
read -

Administrators (WALT2\Administrators)
CREATOR OWNER
SYSTEM
Users (WALT2\Users)
Wally\(WALT2\Wally)

I have a standalone WinX Home box. I don't use "Wally" for anything I
recall. Oh, in Control Panel - System I see my computer is registered
to Wally.

My computer name is "Walt2" and I think I did that one when I was
setting up my DSL, either from my phone company dsl stuff, but I think
it might have been when I set up the Login so I can login like I did
with dialup.

My workgroup is MSHOME.

Can I change my computer name and not get into trouble ?
