Plug and play, immediately identified the printer, loaded the driver,

(odd in that it loaded it on port LW4_____1 or some such )

I've mentioned that I opened the computer to my grandsons, and I've
become convinced that somewhere, somehow, something BAD has been
loaded.

Online games will so soon be a thing of the past, unless I can lock
that sucker down, tighter than a DoD box.

The one ohter thing you might try is the other interface, if
parallel, try attaching it USB, and vice-versa.

The electronics for the two interfaces are mostly separate, so if one
is defunct, the other might not be.

for a few minutes and replug (kills any standby voltage), and if it
still doesn't work, install it on another system to see if it
works. If not, toss it, if so, troubleshoot original system.

XP box is networked to a Vista box. Everything worked fine until
a couple of days, ago. Printer refuses to print. (From either
box.)

Forget the networked issue for now. Focus on the local.

XP (printers and faxes in control panel) says the printer is
"ready". Printer, will print a printer-generated test page with no
problem.

Which is why I asked about the interface. You might try another
cable, or the other interface. Also, power-off isn't always
power-off. Many printers have a standby voltage that only goes away
if unplugged. Be sure you have unplugged the printer power cord for
a few minutes and replugged it.

If the HP driver and software looks for and finds the printer or
tests the connection, the cable is probably ok. Never hurts to try
another, tho.

If USB, HP installs some devices in Device Manager seemingly
unrelated to the printer. They don't always go away with a
deletion/uninstall. You'll have to use Device Manager to clear them
out. To do that, you'll have to set Device Manager to show
non-present devices[1]. Look for names like DOT4Print, or IEEE1284
Printer, or USB Print whose icons are 'dimmed', or grayed. They may
be under the USB category, Printers category, or their own
category. Search and destroy. Leave un-dimmed icons alone.

Next question is what other printers are installed on the same
system as the HP is cabled-to? Some models replace Windows'
WinPrint with their own print spoolers (Lexmark, Epson, Canon), and
can cause this kind of problem. In my experience, Lexmark's
lexbces.exe can be a particular problem to some HP models.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management,
Services. Check the Print Spooler service to see that it is
Started, then double-click it and go to the Dependencies tab. Print
Spooler should depend only on RPC, but nothing should depend on
Print Spooler. If something differs, let me know.

[1] To have Device Manager show installed, but not connected,
devices, go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Environment
Variables button, and add a new variable named
DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES, and set its value to 1. OK out.

Restart the system, open Device Manager, click View in the MenuBar,
and check Show Hidden Devices.

The Environment Variable variable will stick, but the checkmark
won't. If needed, you will have to recheck it each time you open
Device Manager.

All connections have been checked and re-checked.
Printer has been "deleted" and re-installed a couple of different
times.
Print drivers have been deleted, and new print drivers from HP
downloaded and installed.

Odd point. On re-installation, plug-and-play does not find the
printer. Printer has to be manually identified and added.

XP box has been "recovered" back to a date a couple of weeks ago,
with no change.

"Document failed to print" has been the only response.

Wild-ass guesses appreciated. It really is (was) a very good
printer...

Excellent. Walked through them step by step. And achieved,
"Document failed to Print."

I'm gonna haul this big tank of a printer down to the TV station and
hook it to another XP computer down there. If it doesn't work
there, it's straight into the dumpster.

ltp port/irq????
