This can be done with XP. Just hide the extensions in folder options. Also a neat batch renaming without a separate program http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/learnmore/renamephotos.mspx
Janice,

What would be the purpose of renaming a file extension via
batch file or even just doing the F2 thingie?

I thought that the proper way to do that was to re-save the
file using the *new* extension. Did I think wrong?

I'm not talking about changing the extension, just hiding it so it doesn't get in the way when renaming the file

With camera photos you may have 900 like I did after my California trip and just use copy and paste (or drag and drop) to your hard drive from the memory chip.

Iirc, we had something like 1,700 photos after the trip around
the USA. <g> My camera, a Sony Mavica, uses floppy diskettes. the
necessity of which was mandated by my real estate appraisal *job*.

That's my old one. I got a newer smaller Sony that uses memory sticks. I have 2 - 1GB's

If you drag it to a new folder you can then easily rename them in a series such as California(x).jpg where x increment.

Does this 'x' automagically number them sequentially, or do you
have to manually input the 'x' factor? If I am understanding
correctly, that would have been extremely useful for our pics since I
grouped them according to location.

Yes, the (x) magically appears numbered sequentially if you use the windows way. The first file would be Name.jpg and the next in line would be name(1).jpg followed by name(2).jpg and so on.

My
camera automatically names them MFCxxx.jpg

Ditto; mine does the same.

Originally, my camera also created duplicate pics, with a .411
extension. The files were tiny, much like a thumbnail, but, somewhere
along the line, I lost the ability to open those files. :(

Why would you open them then save again using a new name (not extension) unless you were reducing them in size but then I think there is a batch program for that as well somewhere out there.

Every picture I take is reviewed for color, content, and size.
sharpness, etc. When saving the result, each picture is also renamed:
"Wyoming: Deer on roadside.jpg", rather than mvc0144.jpg for example.

I look at them on the camera after taking them and dump them if they aren't clear and take another one if necessary. When I get home I just dump them to my hard drive then delete them off the stick. I rarely need to change them unless emailing or putting up some on my web site and that's only for size. I have ProShow Gold which I then use to create a movie for my DVD player and for others but may not do so right away. I dump those pictures that might be blurry that I didn't catch. I take so many of the same things that dumping one or two doesn't matter. My pictures never need any adjustment to color or sharpness as far as my eyes can tell. The Mavica you have didn't take as good a picture as the one I have now. I don't know if it's due to the diskettes getting overused or the camera or me. Probably a combination.

I suspect I am not understanding what you're puttin' down here.
:)

Uhm, I don't know how I could be clearer ;-)

The Awesome PhotoDude used to answer all my silly camera
questions with the patience of a saint. Every time I thought I had a
clue, he'd come along and add something to the mix to confuse me
further. After five or six years of this Q & A, I finally got things
right ... at least for my camera and my PhotoGoals. ;)

I'll never be as good a photographer as Photodude and there are a few guys locally here who post on another board I visit who take absolutely wonderful pictures. I often "steal" them for my computer background. They don't mind as long as I don't sell them.
