I run three computers on a home LAN and they are always on. A UPS
powers them in case of momentary power outages. Been that way for a
year or two now.
It's really just a choice.
One school of thought says power up inrush is what has the most
potential for damaging equipment. ie; light bulbs fail when powered
up, so minimizing the number of time equipment is powered up is
easiest on it.
Another school of thought says the rotating equipment, fans, disk
drives etc., will fail sooner if run continuously. Most of the energy
star systems take care of that unless you bypass the management
functions.
It is nice to walk up to a already powered on system, and call up
the browser to answer a quick question, or grab a recipe.
