I've decide I'm work with Jpegs first and learn before i jump into RAW
One last thought - if you go for a digital SLR for your first purchase,
think glass (lenses) not camera bodies, as that's your real long-term
investment and what tends to keep you locked into a specific brand. (At
least, if you have more than one lens.) Canon and Nikon are very close on
optics overall, so check out reviews for lenses that seem to be in the
focal
length range you are most likely to use.
