For Hussein, Iran as a sworn enemy is/was something we are not and can never
be, a fellow Arab country.

You really think a sarin-filled explosive device lobbed into a coalition
encampment would have no effect? What about the means for launching them
(that we were told could deliver devastation on neighboring countries, on
Israel and on U.S. targets within 45 minutes)?

For obvious reasons, no one in their right mind (Hussein may have been power
mad, but I do not believe he was crazy ... or stupid) would seriously
consider we'd use nuclear power. This would be as deadly to any coalition
troops in the area as to Hussein ... not to mention the many innocent
civilians. Consider the terrain: loose grains of deadly irradiated sand
picked up in a mushroom cloud traveling farther and harming more than a
similar bomb exploded at sea level.

It's a shame this did not happen.

Who knows what French/Russian/German diplomats were telling

I think any comment along those lines would be purely speculative.
Conjecture at its worst.

As far as the U.S. pulling up short, we went as far as the UN charter
allowed. We got Iraq out of Kuwait. That is all we were to do. And I
agree that losing his sons might have demoralized Hussein. But consider.
This is a man who did not stop short at murdering members of his own family
if he felt them a threat to his power. Eventually, even his sons would have
become suspect.
