As I understand it...

The mine officials were caught in a trap, not of their own making. They
were not operating at the church, and didn't realize that it was being
broadcast nation....opps, worldwide. (One supposes that they were actually
too busy to watch CNN news, at the time). And when they did find out, they
were stuck, since at that particular time, they didn't know for certain, or
at least were not prepared to announce that everyone else was dead. So an
announcement to counter the media-fueled rumor that all was well, would have
been a yo-yo effect, and just a cruel on the friends and relatives.

I don't know the answer, BTW. There certainly was a desperate need to know,
on the part of a good many people, and it certainly was a newsworthy event.
One would hope that Anderson Cooper would be a more responsible talking
head, but he's obviously given to sensationism, and probably more worried
about building a following, than actually providing verified news.

We've seen it before.

Do you know about Geraldo Rivera? (One of the very few reporters that
actually got his ass kicked out of Iraq, because he sketched out rough
coalition battleplans in the sand for a live audience. Including any enemy
Iraqi's that might be tuning in.) BTW, I don't think he was treasonous. I
think he was stupid.

James...

"The public has a right to know."
"Well the public may have a right to know, but that doesn't mean they have a
right to know from you."
