All French newspapers are in tabloid form now Nick so it would be impossible to place two obese Merkins on even the centrefold without them touching -- let alone try and squeeze a door inbetween.

Excellent, Jane. I'm sooo happy now. My life has become so ... so .... very enriched now that you have provided that bit of information. <G>
But ..... the puzzle does not contain a time element. Therefore the newspaper referenced in the puzzle could have been one before the news was converted to tabloid form. Reason being, it's an old, very old, puzzle.
