Only Mutants can spell......

The best spellers report that they "see" the word in their mind, and they
just read off the letters.
I find the description of the process, intreguing (spellcheck "intriguing").
I can easily visualize physical spaces. With barely a glance, I can usually
tell if an object (cabinet base, couch, etc) will fit in a known space. I
do not "see" words. (Even as I type this, it's not like there's a mental
ticker tape running in my mind...the words are just appearing, and if a
particular word doesn't "appear", the odds are that I'd better get to
digging in the dictionary).
While the subject line is somewhat facetious, I have slowly come to the
conclusion (rationalization?) that the ability to spell has a very large
genetic component. Some of us, simply cannot spell. We don't possess the
facility necesary (spellcheck "necessary").
(I'm not tempted to draw any vague reference to "dyslexia" I don't think
there is much, if any correlation between and ability to read well and a
ability to spell well.)
I was watching the internet interview where people were asked "who is the
most dangerous country" and then asked to pinpoint it on a worldview map.
(Apparently, a good many people think that Australia is actually North
Korea)
All of sudden...I noticed, I was viewing a mental map. (I hasten to add,
that the map is not complete. There are some countries, I've never heard
of.) I was simply looking at a picture, and then reading the locations from
the picture.
So this is what they mean when they say they "see" the word.
Try it, yourself.
Do you see "pictures"?
James...
