What can the police lie about while conducting an interrogation?
February 3, 2009

I've noticed while watching The First 48 that the detectives
occasionally lie to a witness or suspect to get information. But what I
haven't ever seen them do is lie about having witnesses who saw the
person being interrogated committing the crime. Every time they told
the
suspect that they had a witness against him, they really did have one.
So it got me thinking: can the police lie about having witnesses
against
you to procure information?

"You have the right to remain silent".
I suggest you practice that and see what happens.

I would suppose it would be churlish of me to suggest that you take your
own advice.

Every tv cop show around always show interrogations that would not
hold up in court.

Really? Do you have any examples? For an interrogation to "not hold up
in court," the police would have to violate the suspect's rights.

But not spending all my time in a court I''m just
assuming as I've never heard of cops being cross examined over the
questions being asked in interrogations. Maybe they are.

Most criminal cases end in plea bargains.

Of course the cops can lie, it's done to make you sweat.

Cops can lie in court under oath too.

Everybody can lie in court; no one is supposed to have permission to do
so.
