The term exists, obviously, because people use the term. It
also has numerous definitions. This is hardly controversial.
*You* first denied the existence of race.
I still do. I don't deny the ability of people to define
arbitrary classifications of people that they CALL "race".
Are you seriously suggesting that race classifications are
"arbitrary"
Yes.
What "race" is Obama? He is usually labeled "black", but has at
least as much European ancestry as African.
They DO have classifications for mixed races you know BOBBY.
You're busy
arguing against things like DNA...
This country uses self-description for most racial classifications,
and self-description is indeed "arbitrary". The only legal
definitions used for race in our history involved the "one drop
rule", where someone was black if there was any identified African
ancestor any time in their ancestry. By the one drop rule, it has
been estimated that something like 30% of self-described "white"
Americans who had an ancestor in this country before the civil war
are legally "black". And of course, ultimately ALL of us have
African ancestry by the prevalent scientific analysis on human
origins.
Bobby - there is a HUGE difference between discussions of race
at your
KLAN meetings and the Aryan Nations, and what is discussed by
geneticists.
Geneticists don't much discuss race, which is mostly a social
construct. The reason is that the genetic diversity within nominal
races is as great as the diversity between races.
They DO and so do ANTHROPOLOGISTS.
No they don't, and neither do anthropologists. Race is mostly a social
construction. What don't you understand about the statement that genetic
diversity within nominal races is as great as the diversity between
races?
The last anthropologist to be concerned with race was Carleton Coon in
his opus _The Origin of Races_ (1962).
Golly all that wasted effort on DNA
research when YOU know ALL the answers.
Most effort spent worrying about the biological nature of skin color is
pretty much wasted effort, which is why geneticists study other things.
