Say a person writes something original, short, posts it to usenet, but
doesn't
pay for the full protection. Then comes to find out later that a TV show
has
used his exact words as posted. Would this be a violation of the
copyright
laws
and how does one go about seeking just compensation for the airing?
Your original words as posted are protected by copyright law
automatically.
And the TV writer is free to dream up the exact same words and use them.
Using the same words is legal - copying is the problem. If there was no
copying, there was no copyright infringement. Your copyright litigation
attorney will send a properly worded demand letter to the alleged
infringer.
The alleged infringer might respond with a claim that the words were
independantly composed. I know what you're thinking - that you could send
a
properly worded demand letter if someone would tell you the words. But
using a copyright litigation attorney is better because you get good
advice
on whether there is any liklihood of recovery.

Thanks for the insight. I've been watching for the promos and I'll get a
complete look on the issue on Sunday when the show airs. It would be nicer
if I
could get the name of episode and when it was aired originally. Which I'll
try
to do.
Although an extremely remote possibility, what if the person who copied MY
words, turns it to some publisher somewhere and actually profits from the
song?
Then if I do apply for full protection of the Copyright law, pay the $20,
then
could they turn around and claim I stole from them?
Yes. Anybody can claim anything.
You could look up their copyright: http://www.copyright.gov/records/

Thanks. Had a look but the records search only showed very few of the episodes.
So I'll just wait and see what becomes of it. In the meantime though, I'll get
my song copyrighted.
