Is Payday really Payday?

A week ago last Friday was supposed to be payday. The paychecks didnt
arrive, so our parent company supposedly was to fly in and deliver the
paychecks by 5 pm that day. The person didnt arrive and I called the
vice president of the company in the city where the paychecks were
supposedly coming from saying that I just MUST have my paycheck by the
next day (Saturday), as the loan company financing my car said they
wanted my car payment by Saturday, or they were going to repossess my
car the following Monday, and I told them they would have it. Well, I
told the guy who was still hanging around, waiting for the paychecks
to come in to put my paycheck on my desk, and he said he would. So
confident that my paycheck would indeed be there the following day, I
drove up to work, and there was no paycheck. I had no money to even
pay for food, let alone the car payment, so come the following Monday,
last monday, my car was repossessed. I called my boss where I work,
and he hadnt a clue as to why I wasnt paid. I sent some rather frantic
emails to my boss, telling him I lost my car. FINALLY, late Tuesday my
boss emailed me saying my paycheck was coming the next day via FEDEX
to the office, and he would personally deliver it to my apartment
Wednesday morning. His email says that the parent company "screwed up
royally, and caused me great disservice, and he took it personaly."

So now I am without a car, my credit is ruined, and I am basically
helpless, as I dont even have public transportation nearby. I had to
walk two miles to go cash the paycheck at my bank. I have a bad knee,
and am now in agony as I have had to walk on my leg, when I never had
to walk very far before. My knee has blown up to the size of a
grapefruit.

I cant get to the grocery store, I can hardly walk. I can work from
home, and have not been fired for threatening legal action against
the company. In fact, my local boss is on my side.

I spoke with an employment lawyer, and he said that LEGALLY payday IS
payday, and that no matter that the company made an error, the fact
that they did not pay me on payday is against the law. The fact of the
matter is that I would have paid my car payment had I been paid on
payday, and lost the car only because I was not paid on payday.

Do I have any case against the company i work for so far as them being
responsible for me losing my car, and putting me in extreme agony, not
to mention hungry? Or am I just screwed and have no case against the
company I work for?

This employment lawyer said he would handle the case if i could come
up with his upfront $2,500 fee. I dont have that kind of money, but if
i sell everything I own I could come up with the money. Would it be
worth it, or not.
