Having had chickens and dogs, I would much rather have dogs
as they aren't such a nuisance! Our chickens growing up
weren't too fond of children either, whereas the dogs are.
I'm wondering what, exactly, about chickens is more
manageable than dogs?

i have 4 dogs & 27 chickens. the chickens are less expensive
& far less trouble. our chickens actually belong to Boo, & he
has been raising them & selling eggs since he was 3 (he'll be
8 in Aug). he even still has his first hen, Kate.
we did have a couple aggressive roosters, but one doesn't
*need* roosters. they would have been soup except someone
asked if they could have them. no idea why. over the years
we've had close to 50 hens (one year a fox took out all but
Kate) & never an aggressive one. granted most hens don't want
to play with the kid, but there are exceptions there too.
Willow loves going for rides on the pedal tractor or the
battery powered Gator.
he lets them out in the morning & closes them up for the
night in the winter (they don't go in until past his bedtime
in the summer), fills the feed bins, checks the waterers (we
fill those), & collects the eggs.
the most he ever does with any of the dogs is curl up with
the Boston terriers to watch tv (which is pretty rare). mostly
he just complains that they're bothering him. i'm pretty sure
he'd curl up & watch tv with a chicken if i let him bring them
into the house.
