What to do with our yard

Now that DS is infatuated with walking, we try not to take him for
stroller rides and let him walk all over the house inside and out.
We have a yard, and we've been thinking about making it enjoyable for
him. So DW and I are thinking about getting Step 2 Climber with slide
and a Cottage (for him to play house, and have his own little modern
cardboard box).
My wife now isn't so sure of the cottage since all the reviews seem to
indicate people get these for there daughters. But at daycare they
have one of these small cottages and he seems to like it. I really
don't care if he plays house. But this is minor.
My question is - are these worth the investment? I know, every child
is different. Yes, there are parks nearby, but they have the large
wooden play areas with the big metal slides.
I figure with these, in the winter especially, he can play inside with
them too.
I was just thinking of what to do to make his playtime outside in our
yard more interesting and all that and was wondering if anyone has any
ideas?
Thanks as always
Paul
