My 2nd son, almost 3 years old, often asks me to draw objects (planes,

I'd be a bit cautious here. It is very common for
kids this age to ask parents to draw things. The more and
better the parent draws, the less the child typically draws.
Some children will then start to resist drawing because they
can't measure up to what their parents can do. It's particularly
dangerous with kids with perfectionist tendencies.
Developmentally, the best thing for him to be doing
is experimenting and drawing himself, without imposing guidelines/
techniques that he's not really developmentally ready for.
I'm sure there are books out there on preschool
art that would provide some guidance for what *is* suitable.
Mostly it seems to boil down to giving them plenty of
opportunity to experiment with different media and being
encouraging and talking with them to find out what they're
thinking. You could provide examples to draw from, but
realize that 3yos are still working on translating from
reality to media. There's a lot of developmental work to
do in terms of conceptualization, fine motor control,
representation, etc. Moving straight to techniques that
assume all those things are in place already can be very
frustrating and ultimately stifle a budding artist instead
of encouraging him.
Best wishes,
Ericka
