But she doesn't know if there were desirable opportunities
that her child missed out on as a result of not being on the list.
How would she know about those?
She said she was on a list but was never contacted through the list.
That
means no opportunities came her child's way, desirable or not, through
the
list.
making connections with other parents (the kid who is dropped off and
picked
up by a bus from a daycare center (quite common in schools here), and who
is
flaky about asking for other's phone numbers or giving them to his parent
when he gets them) included?
I don't follow this. There was a roster sent out. Period.
For me, the rationale for such lists aren't for the parents who are able
to
be there and make connections with other parents, but for the parent who
for, whatever reason cannot make said connections during the school week,
but may wish to do so outside of the normal school day. A list which seems
useless to you might be a lifesaver for the parent with the child who is a
bit flaky and needs the school assignments-and if that child isn't one of
your child's friends, you might never know that the parent relies on that
assistance.
That's what we have homework buddies for. Thats one of the beginning of
the
school year activites - identifying homework buddies and exchanging
information
- and more than one. Also, the teachers have websites where they keep the
homework assignments. Finally, usually there is a lot of overlap with
kids in
the same classes in other activities, like sports and scouts.
See that's the thing about the roster list - with them, folks like you
seem rely
on them to the point that you find it hard to imagine what would happen
without
them. But without them, other things happen to address the same needs.
is why I've juggled drop off and pick up to figure out which mom is attached
to Danielle, Isabella, Paige, and so on. I can see, though, from years of
teaching, where it would be very useful for some parents, not useful for
others. Just because it's not useful for you does not make it an unnecessary
tool. Nor can you assume all schools have websites with up to date
information, or that all children are in sports, scouts, and so on-in the
schools I've taught, both of these are exceptions, because teachers rarely
have the computer access or time needed to update daily websites and most of
the kids go to daycare after school due to working parents.
For that matter, just because you met a parent and exchanged phone numbers
doesn't mean that three months later the parent didn't use the list to
look
you up. There have been times when I've given my business card to parents
so
that they'd have my contact information, only to have the parent ask me
for
my phone number again in a few weeks-because they didn't connect, looking
at
the debris they'd accumulated in their wallet, that card with an e-mail
and
phone number, with my daughter. Which is why I'm thinking I'm going to get
contact cards which include "Alli's Mom" printed before my DD starts pre-K
in the fall!
Contact cards are a good idea. Haven't seen them around here. But the
thing
about someone forgetting and wanting someone to look someone else up later
is no
different from any other situation in real life.
