Isn't knowing one's phone number and address one of those kindergarten
skills?
So that a kid can call home or tell the police where he lives? I think it's
even on the local list of Kinder skills, like writing one's own name.

It's not on our list, but I assumed any school age child would be able to
recite their own address. Not everyone thinks of it, it seems.

By first grade, they write (not having the optimum lineup for a birthday
party
in one single year of kindy 'cause they can't write down the number doesn't
strike me as a great tragic loss). Exchanging numbers is a basic social
skill.

Is it? I'd only ever ask for a phone no. if I expected to need it in the near
future. If some random parent waltzed up to me and asked to swap numbers I'd
think she was a bit odd. Is that what you USians do? Obviously you are much
more free with personal information than we are: if a public school published
a student directory here the principal would probably be hung, drawn and
quartered!
