I don't know what elementary school teachers are thinking when they do
this. We got a list from our son's teacher this year that included a
picture, name, address, birthday of every children, plus the names and
phone numbers of their parents, including cell phone numbers in some cases.
To which I want "Uh, WHAT?" We in no way knew the teacher was going to
do this before she handed it to us. Talk about violation of privacy
issues. The school office wouldn't be handing that information out to
just any random person who called, so why are the teachers handing it
out to 20 people I don't know from anyone?
That's exactly the reason why most schools don't do it at all. Leaving parents
to have invitations distributed in cubby holes to be brought home in backpacks
to other households (maybe). Which in turn leads to issues (or perceived
issues) if every kid isn't invited. But if they can't have the addresses to
mail them...
Arrrgghh.
I do think the privacy issues are waaay more compelling than enabling kid
birthday parties issues.
It gets back (like a lot of etiquette) as to what actually a party is for and
what works all around. Birthday parties are for *friends*, *family*. Not ever
person that might hear a party is being held. Applies to kid parties as much
as adult parties. You dont invite all your neighbors to every BBQ you have
because, gawd forbid, some may notice and know they werent invited.
And *friends* are people you *know*. Well enough to have their address. Hence
no problem mailing out invites since your party is only for friends.
Of course, the sticky wicket is the real friends little kids make, that they
only know from school. And only know by first name. The birthday kids should
be approaching their friends for phone numbers, and write them down. Which goes
along the line of - - what grown people do!(duh) And which would lead to
smaller parties and parents that have actually talked with each other on the
phone to get addresses. Well - horray.
