Re: 2-year-olds reading?

I truly believe that it is just something that was programmed into her from
birth-that she is unusually observant, unusually calm-tempered, and
unusually focused, and the end result, combined with being in a household
where the TV is almost never on and reading is the favored leisure activity,
led to early reading. But I have a friend who's daughter is a year older
than DD, is a very, very bright child, and who shows no interest in reading.
At 2, there was no way this child would sit still for a book, and at 4, it's
something she's willing to do if the story is interesting enough and has
enough action, but she'd prefer to be part of the story. It's just the way
that this little girl was programmed-and in her case, the precursors to
early reading simply weren't included. But I'd be shocked if this child has
any trouble in school intelligence-wise (sitting still might be another
story).

This would describe DD. I don't think she has ADHD at all, but she's a
lot like me at that age and I'm an avid reader and always have been.
Very few things capture her attention long enough unless it involves
*doing* something. She can spend ages pouring water from one container
to another, but looking at something is not nearly as fun.

On another note, the one comment the development pedi made was that
she doesn't recognize pictures. We do have lots of picture books we
show her (most are French), but to be honest I'm not sure I'd
recognize the drawings as the object they're supposed to be! She does
however recognize the 3d object. So if we talk about the cat she can
easily identify the cat, but if we ask her to show us the cat in the
picture she can't, despite having us show her the picture daily.
