Yes - I thought it was funny when she told me.
I was more apt to read more adult books that my mom thought I
shouldn't be reading. My mom tells the story that when she was in bed
trying to avoid a miscarriage of her 4th child (in which she was
unsuccessful), there was a book on obstetrics and gynecology next to
the bed, and I had picked it up and was looking at it (I would have
been about 6). My mom was afraid that the pictures would scare me, so
she said "If you go and get a book, I will read to you". My response
apparently was "That's all right Mummy, I won't read this if you don't
want me to."
I also read a book of my dad's called "For Doctors Only" (it was a
joke book). And when some adult asked me if I knew any jokes, I told
him one of them, which my mom was horrified about, but when I told her
the other joke I remembered, she was glad I picked the one I did. I
was 12 at that time though, so not quite so young.
