My almost 3 yr old has never liked loud noises, so I've always tried to do
vacuuming and the like when she's in another room playing, or when she's
at preschool, or when she's outside with Daddy, but recently, it's turned
from "don't like the vacuum" into being actually scared of it. The first
time I saw her panic was in the store when we were shopping for a new
one-it was like she thought the turned off demo models would attack her.
Now, if I even take the vacuum out of the closet, even turned off, she
goes into a panic mode. I thought that getting her a toy one to play with
might help, and her response at the store was "Put it away, please! I
don't want the vacuum. Put it away!!"-not panic, but about the reaction
you'd expect to see if you handed someone who was scared of snakes a known
harmless, not poisonous variety.
This is literally the only fear she seems to have. She's never had
problems with monsters, ghosts, shadows, or other imaginary things, loves
the halloween displays in stores, and just plain doesn't seem scared of
most things-but my upright sends her into panic, and even the dustbuster
obviously makes her uncomfortable.
Any suggestions short of ripping out the carpet and putting in sealed
hardwood?
Poor baby! My best friend growing up was afraid of vacuums too. I can
remember her at around age 4 being terrified. She got over it eventually,
lots of things helped. Her dad got her some kind of machine she could turn
on and off that made noise, I don't remember now what it was, I think it was
a power screwdriver or something like that. I remember my dad holding her
in his arms and turning the garbage disposal off and on, and me telling her
not to be afraid.
I think 3 is very little, and that you should vacuum when she's in bed or
not around for a month and hope she sort of forgets about it. Then, show
her lots of things that go vroom, toy cars, things like that, and other
machines. I remember everyone was all scared that Anita would become afraid
of dishwashers and garbage disposals and everything else, but she didn't.
Everyone reassured her too that she couldn't be sucked inside the vacuum. I
had a cousin afraid of the toilet for the same reason. So, her parents
would constantly have people tell her that vacuums were safe, her grandma
told her, her other grandma and grandpa, my parents, my grandparents,
everyone seemed to think if wise old people consistently told her not to
fear, she'd get over it.
She did. But she was still really nervous even in kindergarten, I remember
her mom telling the teacher about it.
