Obviously, learning the ropes at school isn't particularly
essential if you don't plan to send your child to school. I think
the rub comes in if it's a matter of skipping kindy but planning to
attend 1st grade at the school. In kindy, they don't assume you
know anything about how to move around the school, deal with lunch
and recess, etc. etc. etc. In first grade, while there may be
newcomers, so much is often assumed. So, you've got as big a
transition to make as if you were going into kindergarten, but
you don't have the support they build in to kindergarten.
This isn't the end of the earth. Kids manage the
transition anyway. It just tends to be a *smoother* transition
if you go through kindy. For instance, we have a reasonable
number of folks around here who'll choose to stay with their
preschool through kindy (if they have a kindergarten program).
Nothing wrong with that. However, if you look at who's struggling
to adapt in first grade near the beginning of the year, it's often
these kids (or other kids who are newly arrived to elementary
school). They get over it, but it's a more challenging introduction.

Best wishes,
