I found that the earrings used for piercing do have a particularly
difficult to get off butterfly, there is often groove on the pin of the
earring and the butterfly has some spring in it and is thus hard to push on
or off as it's the right size for the groove, not for the pin beyond it.
The pins of these earrings are also thicker than those of most other
earrings. I do remember early on if I switched between piercing earrings
(and I had several pairs as there was a market stall locally selling them
for a pound) and other earrings that sometimes it was hard to get the
piercing ones in and there was a sharp pain pushing them through, but fine
after that. The disadvantage of other types of earring is that because they
are less difficult to get on, you're more likely to lose the butterfly or
the earring - for that reason, I never wear studs these days. I had the
gunky problem that you describe, I would use surgical spirit to fully clean
it, but not repeat that after the first time, those kind of things can keep
wounds open, I would just leave the earrings in constantly and twist them
around regularly with clean fingers. I never had to get antibiotics. I was
able to wear mine all the time as I didn't get them until I was in the
sixth form and allowed to wear jewellery - I think it would have taken an
awful lot longer for them to heal if I'd had to keep taking them out and
putting them back in again and it would have been pretty miserable for me
as well. The problem with using the fish hook ones at this stage is the pin
being curved, you put it in and sometimes it doesn't come out the back -
which is probably making something unhealed worse, I've had that problem
repeatedly over the years. Some people just seem to have problems with
earrings, I hadn't had problems for ages, then started having them again
about a year ago, I used to be really cross that my parents made me wait
until I was 16, but reflecting back, I think it was a good idea.
Yes, I've looked at the earring now and it has a groove on, which eaplains
why it was so hard.
I've been cleaning it really often, so maybe I need to cut back on that and
just twist it. The wound is inside the hole, but if you press the side
slightly then gunk has been coming out.
It's now red round the ear lobe and a small patch on the side of her face,
the ear lobe is swollen, but not meaning that the earring is constricting
her ear, and there isn't anything coming out. It's turned easily all the
time.
Claire's accessories say not to use fishhooks for children so I've told her
that they (and all dangly ones-my rule) are not allowed.
I didn't really want her to have them done. I think she's really too young.
But I made a silly promise two years ago (if she got 1000 stars on her star
chart). At the time she spent the stars as soon as they arrived, so I
thought I'd never have to honour it. I've learnt not to underestimate her
determination now...
