Weird. Has this happened to anyone else? It did not ruffle my feathers, I
was just surprised.

Never in the real world, but based on the occasional troll from the
childless aol boards that pop in on our due-date boards, they refer to
us as "moos" and "breeders". I got "into it" with one of them and
they've never come back, and it's been about a year. There are some
who are obviously mature and have obviously made the decision to
remain childless because they felt that was the best life decision for
them personally, but there are far more that while choosing, or at
least claiming to choose, to be childless are outright nasty to
parents, as well as children and brag about their rudeness in the real
world online. It really is rather shocking.

That's where I first encountered self-identified childfree - on the AOL boards
in the early '90s.

Back then we actually had some reapprochement. But that sort of thing depends
on the cast of characters present. I wouldn't be surprised if they have become
dominated by the more shrill among them, as has happened for some time on the
Usenet newsgroup.

IRL, of course, lots of people decide not to have children and don't take these
sorts of attitudes.

I was wondering if at some point the childfree attitude and lingo would bubble
up in public behavior... maybe so. Great - all we need in our public lives is
more hostile self-obssessed public behavior :-/

On the other hand, "breeder" has been in use for some time (even longer than
amongst the childfree) by gays. And not meant in such a denigrating sense.
More an ironic/humurous way to say "not us".
