Have we EVER seen someone who came on with some ad, turn into a continuing
contributor?? And, I don't think it's because Jeff turns them in - that's a
fairly recent thing.
Jeff's been turning spammers in for quite a while iirc.
And yeah, I have seen posters who initially spam stick around, but
it's been in other groups and the person didn't readily understand
that it's frowned upon.
The closest to it are the folks who post something, then post a few chatty
responses to current threads, eventually shoehorning whatever they're
advertising into the conversation.
I really don't think folks who would exploit this medium for financial gain are
the same ones who come here for help.
I don't either, but I think the idea that Jeff is doing such a great
public service and saving the group so new posters who lurk will
decide to post here is OTT.

I have no idea how much good my warnings do.
Nor, when I report something, do I know if it makes a difference. Particularly for Google news. They claim that they only use the reports for research purposes so they can prevent it in the future. I don't know if they will send the offending material to someone after a certain number of reports, or what. Google may get more reports of spam coming from other news services than most news server people.
Other news people report that they took the appropriate action, including steps such a warning, disabling accounts, etc., but I don't know what they actually do. Sometimes I see new spam from the same people going through the same server after the message. I don't know if it is the same account or what. And, it is not really appropriate to tell me details about a private transaction that I am not part of. So I understand why they don't do this.
So, usually, I just report it, maybe comment on the post, then move on.
