Well, I don't necessarily believe that the only consequences of a
child's actions have to naturally flow from that action. In this case,
however, I would caution my child that he would not be permitted to
receive *any* presents until he was able to demonstrate that he could
accept *all* presents -- whether or not particularly desired --
gracefully.
Does that mean, he can receive the present but not play with it when he gets
home? Isn't it rude to refuse a gift, unless it's very unreasonable, like
$1 million dollars (although maybe I wouldn't refuse that, LOL)? How do you
know if he learned to say "thank you" until he gets another opportunity, at
which time he might blow it again (because really, gifts don't come that
often and they forget such warnings very quickly)? If I were just warning
DS he would not get anymore presents, his reaction would be "I don't want
anymore presents, ever!" followed by continued rudeness. So, should we then
tell IL's not to buy anymore presents? They probably will anyway. He's not
always rude, just occasionally when he gets in this sour mood. We don't
know when it will strike. Honestly, I just don't think that will work,
because DS doesn't care about future consequences when he's like that, and
no one will remember not to bring him gifts, and we don't feel right not
accepting gifts. Keeping gifts from him is an option, but gift-giving
occasions are few and far between. To withhold a gift for a transgression 6
months earlier seems a bit much, not to mention, I might not even remember
to withhold it.
