Oh, some kids wore those things. But nobody cared if others
didn't,
is my point. I never wore any of that, and it didn't affect my
popularity in the least. Nowadays, clothing is one of the first
things kids seem to notice.

I'm not taking your word for it that it's any different. I don't
know
how you can really judge that anyway. I know that I'm constantly
warring with myself over what to buy DD. On the one hand, I have a
great desire to get her the "cool clothes" that I was never allowed
growing up -- a desire fueled by the fact that I *did* indeed feel
left out because of it. On the other, I have a somewhat frugal
manner
and so I just choke on the prices of some of this stuff (the kids
all
want Nike Shocks this year. I think "Shocks" must refer to the
price
tag).

I see kids in 3rd grade wearing trendy styles. Even when my ds was
in
3rd grade (he's 22 now), nobody seemed worried about it.

Well, I'm not going to argue with you about how things are in your
locality. But I still think you're taking your personal impression
and making a general statement out of it. My personal impression has
been different.

Yeah..... most people take their personal impression and make a
general statement of it.

I find myself skeptical of a lot of "the world is going downhill" type
things I hear or read. I read these scary stories about the youth of
today in newspapers and magazines, and I think, "Well, they must have
some basis to them." But they just don't mesh with the kids I see
around me, who are pretty much the same kids as we were all those
years ago.

Which has nothing to do with what I posted above.
