After I wrote this I remembered that most years Shaina has had one or
two relatively costly items she's needed to buy for school. This year
she needed a scientific calculator for algebra. In past years she's
needed a large box of colored pencils ... a special binder with those
clear plastic sleeves for inserting pages without punching holes in
them ... a basic calculator ... shorts and a tee shirt in a narrow
range of colors for PE.) All things that were no problem for us but I
could see that they could have potentially been out of the range of
some really struggling families. And I'm not sure how they handled it.
But I'm sure that a quiet conversation with the teacher or counselor
would have found a solution.
