Saying someone else doesn't know how to do something is
sometimes derogatory. Maybe it's always at least a bit
derogatory. Saying someone doesn't know how "to be
a good daddy" is certainly derogatory IMO and definitely
not a good thing to say to a child about his/her own parent,
especially when it's someone you've divorced from.

"didn't know how to look after you" would be better IMO
but still not good. A "good daddy" could be someone who
visits occasionally even though he doesn't know how to
look after the child, IMO. There was another post with
a paragraph of good wording that someone else wrote better
than I could have -- better to start from there.
