I've got a super-pale redhead with very sensitive skin. I try to keep
him covered up as much as possible and I slather sunscreen on him, but
the one I'm using (Banana Boat Kids' tear-free SPF 50) seems to be less
than effective -- as in, he pinks up almost immediately, even after a
thick coating. DH read somewhere that all sunscreens are not created
equal; does anyone have a brand they like? Thanks!!

I'm a redhead and have a very fair skinned easy to burn toddler and 7 year
old. There are 2 types of sunscreen, a chemical sunscreen and a sunscreen
that provides a physical block to the sun. There is no reason that you
can't use both effectively.
We use the chemical sunscreen at least 30 min before going into the sun and
the physically blocking sunscreen after we are at the pool, park, etc. Then
we trade back and forth depending on how long we are in the sun.
We wear sunscreen almost every day, as soon as the kids are out of the
shower it's applied. (In sunny weather months) As I said, I'm a red head
and mega freckled :) , my kids are very light skinned and there is quite a
bit of history of aggressive skin cancer in my family. (past 4 generations
that I know of and for some reason, almost all women). I wear sunscreen w/
a face moisturizer on my face every day regardless of the weather.
