My son is 6 weeks old. My doctor has been having me alternate between
nursing and bottle feeding since he was two weeks old because he was
not gaining enough weight just nursing. He has gained well with this
system, however, for about the last week he will nurse and then be
hungry an hour later. (When it is time for a bottle he will eat and
then be ok for about 3 to 4 hours.) I feel like I am not giving him
enough when he nurses. (It is making me consider switching over to
strictly bottle only.)
If it were me, it would make me consider slowly weaning out the bottle and
only nursing. Nursing is a supply and demand proposition. Does the ped's
office have a lactation consultant you could talk to? If not, perhaps
contacting your La Leche League for help.
On top of that, for the last two nights his
sleeping schedule has gone topsy turvy. He is sleeping like he did
when I first brought him home from the hospital (waking and acting
hungry about every 45min. to an hour.)
If I recall correctly this is perfect timing for a growth spurt. They happen
no matter what you are feeding them.
His grandparents visited from
out of town over the weekend and he was held alot. Could that have
gotten him out of his routine? Any suggestions on how to get him back
to it? My doctor says to continue feeding him as I have been and try to
keep him awake longer during the day to see if he will sleep better at
night. If anyone has any other suggestions it would be greatly
appreciated. I am about at my wits end due to lack of sleep.
6 weeks is still a little early for a profound adherence to aschedule IMO. I
would not necessarily try to keep him awake TOO much longer since at this
age being overtired is an obstacle to good deep sleep. Others here will have
excellent advice, I am sure. But these are my thoughts.
