What surprised *me* about the valentines he received, is that they all
came with candy or a pencil or something! I'd brought in a box of
cookies for the party (as suggested on the handout I'd received), but
it never occurred to me to put candy or something with the actual
cards. Is this getting to be typical?

It was not typical in the Chicago area and was discouraged there.
Here in the New Orleans area, it is quite typical and most of the
stuff is candy.

I guess we're far out in the boonies enough that we're no longer the
Chicago area? ;-) (Northern Lake County)

If you aren't in Cook County... <g>

Lol. I still think of myself as being in the Chicago area,
nevertheless. :P <g>

New Orleans snacks tend toward really sweet junk food. Some of it
is so overly sweetened that it's sickening, imo. While King Cakes can
be sweet or less sweet, having them every day for 20 days until every
child has a chance to find the *baby* is just a bit too much for me.

I've only had King Cake once, when we had an employee who had recently
moved from Louisiana and got them shipped to him. ;-) I can see where
that would get to be a bit much! The kids only get real sweets at
pre-school when it's someone's birthday, or if they have a school
party, which seems to be once a month or so.

And fwiw, the snacks they serve tends towards carbs but not very sweet,
like graham crackers. Lunches are a good variety, and the only place
ds eats veggies - until tonight, that is, when he actually begged me to
make broccoli - and ate some!

Lunches in preschool?

My kids never had lunch at preschool unless they brought a bag lunch
to an extended lunch program.

They are in a full day pre-school/daycare setup. If you do just the
pre-school, you have the option of keeping them there for lunch and
paying extra. But yes, they get lunch, which is very nice for me.
