Keep in mind that this part of the conversation came about because of
two statements with which I disagreed:
1 - Athiests are never obnoxious about "pushing" their beliefs on
others, the way Bible Thumpers are; and
2 - ALL religious people believe that people of other faiths are wrong.
I understand that you have family members who are obnoxious and have
made life difficult for you -- I just wish you weren't so certain that
folks who are religious are not thinking critically about their beliefs.
In the circles in which I travel, we are expected to do just that. I
don't have the book with me right now, but tomorrow evening I'll try to
post a couple of old (1880's and 1930's) quotes from liberal Christians
(Unitarians) about the importance of using our minds in our beliefs.
UUs are a special lot, though. I can't think of any other organized
religion that so actively promotes questioning as a principle of the
religion itself (some types of Buddhism, perhaps).
As I've read more and more, I've been surprised at how many religious
people DO promote critical thinking.
Having been raised in a church that did not, it came as something of a
surprise.
Granted, it is a central part of Unitarian Universalism (one of the
songs in our hymnal includes the line, "To question truely is the
answer.") in a way that may not be quite so true anywhere else.
