Thanks, Erica. I think my own angst has made it hard for
me to figure out what positive suggestions I could make.
She's not as computer savy as I'd like, but I can
certainly get her started looking at the various college
options where we'll be moving, to figure out which one
she'd like (I know there are several community colleges
as well as 4 year colleges in the area) and what she has
to do to get her credits transferred and such. Having
something positive to DO, instead of just waiting, ought
to help.

She and I will be staying here through the end of this
semester -- I think I'll also get a mail subscription to
the paper where we'll be moving to, so she (and I) can
start reading it and getting somewhat acclimated.

I was always excited to move. Eventually, I got so I'd
make scale models of all my furniture (on graph paper) so
that when we had a house to move in to, I could make a
scale drawing of the house and figure out where the
furniture would fit. (Because sometimes my furniture was
in storage for up to two years before we would move into
a house and it is easy to forget stuff in that time.)

Another thing you might start doing is figuring out which
things you don't want to take, and getting rid of those
things now at your leisure. You can start packing some of
the things now too - getting boxes from the liquor store
(they have nice sturdy boxes) or wherever. Although
sometimes old cardboard boxes harbor roaches or roach
eggs.

We have plans to get a dumpster and a Pod (mostly to use as
a staging area) and attack the garage -- most of our
furniture is not worth moving, so the dumpster may be more
important than the Pod!

just a suggestion, you might want to Freecycle the furniture.
it might not be worth moving to *you*, but for someone with
nothing it might be just the thing they need.
it helps keep more stuff out of landfills longer & it helps out
others. (and it's easier than setting up a yardsale).
I have no idea if we're going to rent for a while, or try
to buy something quickly -- since DH will be out there for
a while before I am, he may end up deciding (roughly) where
he wants us to live, and he may decide about how soon he
wants us to buy.

renting first in a very new area is a good idea. you'll have no
idea if that really cute house is in a really bad
neighborhood...
at least i'd prefer to get to know the neighborhoods before
buying. i have a buyer's agent in upstate NY looking at
properties for us. i've known him for 5 years & i think he
understands what i'm looking for. since he lives in the area i
want to move to & he has been an agent in that market for over
10 years, he can tell me when something is vastly overpriced or
a bargain.
This job offer includes a moving company! Woohoo! DH and
I will drive the van out now, then I'll fly back. He'll
come back in May to help close the house, but DD2 wants to
drive our other car out by herself (or maybe with a friend)
-- and I'm rather inclined to go along with that idea. I
think a few weeks on the road more or less alone will be
good for her. Plus, I think it will work out for her to
pick up her twin brother in Iowa on the way, and stop in
the mid-west to see some relatives.

if you use a moving company, list *everything* they put on the
truck. then check it off at the other end (open the boxes & look
inside). do NOT sign off at the new place *until* you have
checked everything for damage or existing. i can't stress this
enough, because once you sign, they're no longer liable. things
do mysteriously disappear from taped boxes. complete inventory
is your only recourse.
