I am a mother of three children, and I have been a daycare provider for
almost twelve years now. I always passed out a master list of names to
the parents, and suggested that they allow their child to select which
card they wanted to give to their friends, then have the parent write,
holding the child's hand, both names. Kids get a huge thrill out of
being able to "write" and it is something you are taking time out to do
with your child that shows consideration for someone else. Another way
to do it when you don't have a master list of names is to allow your
child to "write" the name of the other children while you sign each
card with your child's name. Is it possible for you to organize a
master sign-up list for all of the parents?
Developmentally, it is a great idea for your child to see his/her name,
and it is amazing how young they are able to recognize it, even as
young as age two, when they are exposed to it every day. It is a great
pre-reading exercise. I hope this helped!
Thanks to all for the input. We handed out the cards at the playgroup and
it ended up that half the parents only signed the child's name (what we
did), the other half put "To: My Friend." I thought that was a nice touch,
but our cards fit right in with everyone else's.
As for DS, he's exchanging them next week. Thanks, Angie, for the
suggestion to help DS write by holding his hand. We didn't put anyone's
name on the cards, we just signed it, but he did get a big kick out of
"writing" his name. I didn't think he'd enjoy it so much. In fact, I
thought he might fight the idea. It was fun. He had fun. Thanks.
