What I do have a problem with is paying someone a ton of money to do what parents could do on their own.
That's pretty much it for me. Subletting any "hard" parental tasks to others, and keeping the baby/kid around for play and show-and-tell, is sometimes where it seems like things are going. I can see them at parties with their friends, instead of swapping stories about methods, books read, funny things that happened in the process, it would be, "This is who I paid to get my kid to sleep, who did you pay? And oh, what was the number of that person that taught your kid to pee in the potty? I've been meaning to pay someone to do that for months! Now, where is that cocktail tray...."
Eh, I really don't see it that way. I suspect most of this woman's clients are hiring her more because they feel they haven't got a clue than because they're not interested in spending the time to do the job. In fact, I would suspect that most of her clients have her in for observation for some nights and then just get the email support and do it themselves. I mean, it's not like sleep issues are the sorts of things that everyone knows how to handle and it's just a motivation issue. All you have to do is look through the m.k archives to see that there are loads of folks who are completely confused about how to encourage a baby to sleep through and lots of disagreement over what techniques are best. Obviously, a lot of this is common sense, but as the old saw goes, common sense isn't particularly common. (And when sleep deprived, it's even harder to come by!) Mind you, I think this woman has a lovely racket going on, but I think she's taking advantage of people's confusion much more than their lack of motivation.
Best wishes, Ericka .
