Even at 2am you can find the correct dosage for an over-the-counter medicine based on weight, either from a 24 hour pharmacist or even on the web (as someone else pointed out, http://www.askdrsears.com has excellent tables with dosages for OTC meds by weight). You don't have to rely on rules of thumb. Some meds are linear by weight for kids (e.g., Tylenol, which is 15mg/kg) and others aren't (especially cold meds that have multiple active ingredients).
