When my daughter went to college, they specified a Mac for CS majors,
but her dh (who wasn't her dh at the time) who entered as an
engineering student was to get IBM. It didn't really matter though
because dd switched to a straight math major and is now a professional
horse trainer and judge, and SIL switched to business.

The first thing to do though when you are picking a platform is to
check and see if there is software that will run on that platform.
For us, most of the navigation software available runs on MS, as
little as I like that.
