Re: INTC a good buy?

And another AMD fanboy spreading false information on usenet, go to
tomshardware and read and decide for yourself. I'm posting excerpt

"Our measurements make very clear that the Core 2 micro-architecture
makes a huge difference in power consumption. Using Core 2 Extreme
X6800 reduces total system power consumption by as much as 30% under
maximum load when compared to Pentium Extreme Edition 965, and by
12%/28% when idle (with/without SpeedStep). "

top-of-the-line Intel dual core chips are marginally faster than the top AMD
dual core chips,
30% faster is not what I would considering "marginally"

but they are priced accordingly, and unless you plan on
getting the very fastest Intel chip ($1000+), then the fastest AMD chip (and
the others in the AMD line) are just as good as the equivalent priced Intel
chips.
false, case in point
Core 2 Duo E6600 MSRP $249 Retail $335
AMD equivalent Athlon FX62 Retail $839

Since AMD has had their dual cores in the market for some time now, it is
reasonable to believe that they might leapfrog Intel before Intel comes out
with any new chips. At any rate, equivalent chips from Intel and AMD (in
terms of processing power) will be priced about the same (maybe AMD a bit
cheaper), so it does not make much difference to most people.
false, Intel chip is already out in the market. Even after AMD price
cut, Intel is still better for price/performance.

Expect to see a Dell offer AMD chips for their desktops and possibly laptops
(in addition to server announcement already made) in the near future.
speculation

With regard to a 4 hr job taking 14 minutes, that was probably a comparison
with a very old single core chip with a new dual core chip. There is no dual
core chip on the planet that can process more than twice as fast as an
equivalent speed (3 GHz, for example) single core chip. And that can only
occur with a very limited number of (mostly professional) applications that
can do parallel processing.

"Want an comparison of a more mundane, everyday sort? Try this on for
size: the overclocked Intel system compressed an entire 2.5 hour movie
on DVD in under 6 minutes! This involved converting from DVD9 to DVD4.7
formats. The real strengths of the Intel Core 2 clearly lie in the
video realm: the Intel system converts a 2 hour movie into the
well-known DivX format in 93 minutes, whereas the AMD system takes 155,
or just more than one hour longer, to complete the same task."

Your everyday stuff like web browsing and Office applications will not run
any faster with dual core unless you doing something else at the same time
(like maybe running a virus scan). There are some games being developed to
exploit dual core, but not many available yet.
